Underwriter

The primary role of the Underwriter is to exercise discretion and independent judgment in development, implementation and management of underwriting programs and tools to support overall business objectives, including the management and control of client risks and losses.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Analyze health and welfare benefit plan clients' characteristics and assess risks as to frequency and potential severity of losses and risks to clients utilizing established underwriting criteria and polices to provide proper rating methodologies
  • Perform risk assessment of specific medical conditions, interpretation of medical diagnoses and the overall impact of specific health conditions
  • Represent and negotiate rates and plan options with insurers for an on behalf of clients to secure optimal, cost-competitive health and welfare benefit plans
  • Build and maintain models to assist in the economic analysis of market alternatives
  • Evaluate, determine and recommend alternative coverages, pricing options and plan design changes based on economic analysis of available plan elements vis-à-vis client circumstances and goals
  • Validate renewals/proposals for accuracy
  • Establish and maintain quality service standards assuring timely service to Trion team
  • Remain abreast of the dynamic, competitive insurance environment, new and complex insurance projects, appropriate underwriting techniques and constantly changing legislation that governs business
  • Work with Account Management team to develop RFP and on presentations to clients concerning technical rating matters
  • Achieve both client and internal deadline compliance
  • Support Trion with assistance in special projects as assigned New Business Development
  • Conduct competitive bidding of all coverage lines and present financial and contractual findings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • At least 5 years Underwriting experience in Benefits Brokerage/Consulting/Insurance industry
  • Effective analytical, math and problem solving skills, sound judgment, strong decision making ability, confidence to make difficult decisions and excellent communication skills
  • Must be organized, detail oriented and able to translate big picture ideas into client objectives
  • Must have strong negotiation and persuasion skills
  • Must have ability to multi-task and work in a team environment
  • Must have computer skills proficiency and experience with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Working knowledge of pivot tables is preferred.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The work is typically in normal office environment, either on-site at Trion or at various customer locations. Some travel is required.
